Elizabeth, from Johnstone, studies for a BA in Theological Studies on a part-time basis and hopes to graduate in 2028. She was chosen for the award because of the quality of her academic work, as well as her participation in and contribution to student life within HTC’s geographically dispersed community.

Elizabeth undertakes her studies alongside significant personal and professional responsibilities, including caring for her husband, who has limited mobility due to a long-term illness, and raising her teenage children. She has also made a significant and lasting impact on the college community. Among other activities, she has assisted with the planning and delivery of the college’s open days.

In addition, Elizabeth is the coordinator for Glasgow Street Pastors. This role involves training individuals across the city and the west of Scotland. She oversees several teams of volunteers working across Scotland and liaises with multiple agencies and organisations in this challenging role.

Innes Visagie, HTC’s Vice-Principal (Academic), said:

“Elizabeth is a part-time student who is also heavily involved in her Street Pastors commitments, through which she engages with and supports young people in the community, while simultaneously caring for her family, including her husband.

"Despite these significant responsibilities, she continues to make a strong contribution to her academic studies through active participation in class discussions. In addition, she plays a valuable role in supporting the wider HTC student community, including assisting with the setup and delivery of content during open days.

"Her ability to balance these commitments while maintaining such a positive and engaged presence makes her a truly exceptional student and a deserving recipient of this award.”

Elizabeth said:

“I’m thrilled to receive this award from HTC. It has been such a privilege to study in an environment that is so supportive.

"A huge thank you to the staff, who have always encouraged me to grow while supporting me along the way, and to my fellow students for their care, friendship and companionship throughout my studies.

"I’m so grateful to everyone at HTC for their hard work and support.”

Elizabeth will receive a £100 prize and will now go forward for consideration for the Overall UHI Student of the Year Award 2026.
